Young Ronald Terubea caused a major upset to give Manoj Kumar victory in the Mohammed Badshah Memorial Open Chess Championships, held on Sunday 29 April 2012 at the Pasifika Campus in Suva. The 2011 National Junior Champion convincingly ended the winning streak of Candidate Master (CM) Calvin Prasad to give Candidate Master (CM) Manoj Kumar an added advantage to scoop the title. Terubea, the 19-year-old maritime student, blitzed the time-troubled Calvin Prasad in Round 3 and handed the reigning National Champion his first defeat since October 2011. Calvin Prasad was undefeated in the past 30 matches.
Candidate Master Calvin Prasad continued his winning streak from October 2011 as he won 5 games out of 5. He defeated a strong challenge from Candidate Master Manoj Kumar and Dr Neel Arora to win the prestigious Brijlal Open Chess Championship on 18 March 2012 at the Fiji School of Medicine (Pacifika Campus).
The Tappoo City Open Chess Championship was won by Candidate Master Calvin Prasad. He triumphed in all 4 of his games. He was followed closely by arch rivals Dr Neel Arora and Candidate Master Manoj Kumar who had 3 wins. The Best Female Player in the Elite Division was given to Wati Kado, an upcoming youngster.
The Intermediate Division tied between 4 players who amassed 4 wins out of 5 games. After tie-breaks, the order of winners from 1st to 4th was declared in the order of Martin Feussner, Brian Terubea, Joseph Yuen and 9 year old Jacky Masilomani. The Female Division was won by Jacky Masilomani at 4 wins. She was followed by Louise Masilomani at 3 wins and Sugandha Goswami at 2 wins and 1 draw.
