Manoj Kumar

2008 National Champion, MAnoj Kumar attained another title for Fiji Chess Federation when he earned a Candidate Masters tilte powering his way to 3.5 out of 7 points at the 38th Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany (2008).

Kumar was undoubtedly the best local chess player of the year and his performance at the Chess Olympiad all but cemented the title. He has also represented the country at the 2000 Oceania Zonal Chess Championships in Brisbane, Australia; the 2002 Oceania Zonal Chess Championships in Sigatoka, Fiji; the 36th Chess Olympiad in Calvia, Spain (2004); the 37th Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy (2006); the 2007 Oceania Zonal Chess Championships in Nadi, Fiji; and the 38th Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany (2008).

A deserving victory for the years of input in the sport he loves.

De Asa attains his CM title

Past National Junior Champion, Virgilio De Asa Jr was awarded his Candidate Masters title after he had a published rating of 2205.

FCF Secretary Jashint Maharaj mentioned that the award was a recognition for the hard hours put in over the many years and he was looking forward to De Asa perfoming in the local arena.

Prasad is Fiji's first CM

2004 National Champion, Calvin Prasad attained another first for chess in Fiji when he earned a Candidate Masters tilte powering his way to 6.5 out of 12 points at the 37th Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy (2006).

Prasad has shown consistent form and was looking forward to tussling with the 'big guns' of chess at the world event. He has also represented the country at the 36th Chess Olympiad in Calvia, Spain (2004) and the 2005 Oceania Zonal Chess Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.

FCF President, Dr. Virgilio De Asa was happy with the achievement and mentioned that Prasad still has alot of chess to play and will continue to improve his game.

FA title for Maharaj

Fiji Chess Federation General Secretary Jashint Maharaj was awarded his FIDE Arbiter's title by the FIDE Presidential Board at the first quarter meeting in Al Ain City, United Arab Emirates (13-14 April 2006).

Maharaj who has arbitered at the 2002 Oceania Zonal Chess Championships in Fiji, the inaugural Fiji Invitational Chess Championships in 2003, the 2005 Oceania Zonal Chess Championships in Auckland, New Zealand and the 2006 Queenstown Classic in Queenstown, New Zealand was extremely thrilled at the award and looked forward to major chess tournaments in the region.

"The achievement is exceptional as Jashint is one of only 50 FIDE arbiters in the world and has achieved a first for the Pacific and for Fiji" said FCF President Dr. Virgilio De Asa.

Lyons awarded WFM title

Australia-based Keiran Lyons, who played on board two for the Fiji Women's team at the 36th Chess Olympiad in Spain last year, was awarded the Women's FIDE Master title in January 2005. Lyons, 16, achieved the required 66% score to qualify for the title, and becomes the first Fiji player to be awarded a FIDE title.

"She is part of the first Women's team to represent Fiji and will definitely continue to improve her standard of play" commented Dr. Virgilio De Asa, FCF President.

Keiran will represent Fiji at the upcoming 37th Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy in May 2006.
