Raicar takes out junior chess

GAURAV Raicar of University of South Pacific took out top honours in the 2010 Fiji Chess Federation National Junior Championship at the Pasifika Campus on Sunday. Raicar also qualified for the 2010 Fiji National Chess Championship.
The tertiary student finished with 4.5 points after outwitting secondary school student Samuel Prasad of MGM High School, grabbing the U20 National Junior Championship title.
Rajiv Raj of USP finished in second place with a score of 3.5 points ahead of Joseph Yuen who settled in 3rd place with a total of 3 points.
Reshmita of MGM High School won the Under-20 Women's Division title.
Hilda Vukikomoala of St Joseph Secondary School won the Secondary School Division grade with 5 points.
While Claudia Koroi took out Primary School division.Wayne Areki won the U18 grade, Sachin is the new U16 champion, Antelu took out the U14 division and Esha Raicar of MGM Primary reigned in the U12 grade.
FCF assistant general secretary Gaurav Raicar said 40 competitors from 10 schools took part.
"It was a massive turnout, this shows potential of chess in Fiji," he said.
About 30 players were rewarded with chess books and cash.
With the sponsorship of Flour Mills of Fiji it will definitely encourage many players to attend more tournaments and improve their game play."
