Sunday Chess Clinics
The Fiji Chess Federation will be running chess clinics every Sunday. This is to encourage beginners to understand the basics of the game and also allow active players to train and reach intermediate levels. The main objective is to develop the pool of younger chess players in Fiji.
"Target groups will be learning how to play the game of chess and for others, they can come and strengthen their existing skills," commented President Dr Virgilio De Asa. "There will be coaching sessions for both beginners and chess enthusiasts. There will be friendly games and open discussions on standard openings, middlegame and endgame tactics."
"There is a lot of untapped potential in Fiji when it comes to chess. Chess clinics are the best ground to identify young players who can become tomorrow's sporting masterminds and assist them to reach the next level," General Secretary Krishneel Nair reported. The clinic be open to all irrespective of age, gender and player skill level. The chess clinics are absolutely free and anyone who is interested can register for them."
Special attention will be given to the development of female players since Fiji needs to form a young female team to compete in upcoming Oceania and Olympiad tournaments. In the long run, it is hoped that female players will compete in the elite division against the likes of Chessmasters Manoj Kumar and Calvin Prasad and cause some major upsets.
The first chess clinic will be held on Sunday 18 September 2011 at the Fiji School of Medicine (Pacifica Campus) at Extension Street, Suva from 09:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
Announcements for Chess Clinics will be made at every tournament to register as many players as possible. Interested players may register during the Courts Fiji Open on 11 September 2011 or send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
