The Flour Mills of Fiji (FMF) Under-20 Championship was held on 21 August, 2011 at the Fiji School of Medicine (Pacifica Campus) at Extension Street, Suva. The tournament was for everyone born on or after 21 August 1991. A huge number of young chess players turned up for the event and showcased their various tactical skills.

The competition was well-balanced as it ended with a 4-way tie-break between Ronald Terubea, Keiz Terubea, Samuel Prasad and Joseph Yuen who all had 4 wins from their 5 games. All 4 players shared the 1st prize whereas Brian Terubea, Atman Nand, Pramisesh Premadish and Wayne Areki held the 2nd to 5th positions. Among the winners were 3 brothers from the Terubea family.

The female category was won by Hilda Vukikimoala who edged young rival Reshmita Singh for the 1st prize. They were followed by Jacqui Masi, Neelam Kumar and Claudia Koroi for the 3rd to 5th positions. Best newcomer awards were given to Ashutosh Chand, Mavita Mataika, Vishanuel Prasad and Tejesvi Patel. The top 3 winners in the Primary School category were Adrian Amoe, Semesi Vukikimoala and Austin Koroi.

The Senior Division was an unpredictable fight which dragged to the final round. All the best players faced defeat in their 5 rounds of play. Dr Neil Arora was defeated by CM Calvin Prasad, CM Manoj Kumar was defeated by Dr Neel Arora and CM Calvin Prasad was defeated by Goru Arvind in closely contested games. In addition, CM Calvin Prasad drew with CM Manoj Kumar and Dr Neel Arora drew with young and improving player Ravinesh Singh. This led to the 1st position being tied between 4 players at 3.5 points off 5 games, and after tie-break calculations CM Calvin Prasad, Dr Neel Arora, CM Manoj Kumar and Ravinesh Singh held the 1st to 4th positions while Goru Arvind and Noel Adricula were 5th and 6th with 3 points each.

All players walked home with lucrative cash prizes, heaps of new experience in chess and a smile on their face. This was truly, one of the most successful tournaments of the year.
