2012 Tappoo City Open
The Tappoo City Open Chess Championship was won by Candidate Master Calvin Prasad. He triumphed in all 4 of his games. He was followed closely by arch rivals Dr Neel Arora and Candidate Master Manoj Kumar who had 3 wins. The Best Female Player in the Elite Division was given to Wati Kado, an upcoming youngster.
The Intermediate Division tied between 4 players who amassed 4 wins out of 5 games. After tie-breaks, the order of winners from 1st to 4th was declared in the order of Martin Feussner, Brian Terubea, Joseph Yuen and 9 year old Jacky Masilomani. The Female Division was won by Jacky Masilomani at 4 wins. She was followed by Louise Masilomani at 3 wins and Sugandha Goswami at 2 wins and 1 draw.
The Fiji Chess Federation also re-elected most of its existing members who had been serving office bearer roles. Dr Virgilio De Asa retained his position as FCF President, Vice-Presidents Calvin Prasad and Gloria Sukhu were re-elected, Treasurer Manoj Kumar was elected to serve for another year and the General Secretary's role was awarded to Teiko Koroi with Goru Arvind as the Assistant Secretary. Hilda Vukikimoala was elected as a member of the Executive Committee.

The Fiji Chess Federation awarded the following people for outstanding results in 2011:
Best Player of 2011 - Candidate Master Calvin Prasad for winning the highest number of tournaments in 2011 including the Chess League and the National Chess Championship. The also won majority or all of his games in every tournament.
Best Junior Player of 2011 - 17 year old Nausori student Ronald Terubea fittingly bagged the award for winning the 2011 Under 20 Flour Mills of Fiji (FMF) Chess Championship and qualifying into the 6-member male squad which had been named to prepare for the 2012 Chess Olympiad at Istanbul by virtue of his strong performance in the National Chess Championship. He managed to upset senior players like Dr Neel Arora, Rajiv Raj and New Zealand based Asheesh Gautam to secure his spot.
Most Improved Player of 2011 - 9 year old Jacky Masilomani became the youngest local chess player to win this award after she became the 2011 Primary School Chess Champion. At a tender age, she manages to defeat players who are much older than her with ease and is great inspiration to other female chess players.
The 2012 Chess Calendar will be finalised and published on this website within the next 10 days. The Fiji Chess Federation looks forward to a massive year, especially with the Fiji International Open Chess Championship which has a tentative prize pool of $ 10,000 in May 2012. The 6 member male squad and 12 member female squad which was selected after the 2011 National Chess Championship will be allowed to participate in the Fiji International Open 'Free of Charge' as declared in the FCF Annual General Meeting.
