20th Kundan Singh Open Chess Championship results

 
The first round saw CM Manoj Kumar held to a dramatic draw by Ravinesh Singh. This game set the tone for the tournament where the games were intense and fiercely contested. As a determined player, Singh proved that he is not to be reckoned with. Defending Champion CM Calvin Prasad was unable to make it to the event due to personal reasons.
 
   

Kumar wins chess for a record foyr

SCHOOLTEACHER Manoj Kumar extended his reign as Fiji's best chess player to a record four years yesterday after winning the JR White-sponsored National Championship at the Pasifika Campus in Suva.

Candidate master Kumar has been winning the championship since 2007 and won on a tie break after finishing the eight-player round robin competition with 5.5points along with Dr Neel Arora.

"This is an achievement for me in the sense that I've won a series of national championships," he said.

Next up for Kumar is the Oceania Zonal Championship in January.

Candidate master Calvin Prasad finished third with five points followed by Dr Sanmogam Gounder (4.5), Taione Sikivou (4), Simon Kongman (2) and Goru Arvind (1.5) while national junior champion Gaurav Raicar lost all his matches.

   

19th Kundan Singh Open - Results

The 19th Kundan Singh Open Chess Championships held on Sunday was the great starter event for the Fiji Chess Federation 2010 calendar.

 CM Calvin Prasad kept his calm and outwitted defending champion CM Manoj Kumar in a teetering match in the fourth round to claim the first prize. CM Prasad played well with four wins and a draw to amass a total of 4.5 points out of 5 rounds.

2009 Oceania Zonal Chess Championships

The 2009 Oceania Zonal Chess Championships was held at the Outrigger Twin Towers Resort on the Gold Coast, Australia from 20-26 June. With the event being a world championships cycle qualifier, the big names in Oceania Chess were out to win the event.

Local National Champion Manoj Kumar will be the official representative to the Open event. He is joined by Damien Norris, Calvin Prasad, Dr. Sanmogam Goundar and Gaurav Raicar.
