2009 Rajnesh Parmeshwar Memorial
Defending Champion CM Manoj Kumar capped off a brilliant round of chess with win at the 7th edition of the Rajnesh Parmeshwar Memorial Chess Championships held on 6th June 2009 at the Fiji Olympic House in Suva.
Kumar who had suffered a humilating previous tournament turned the tides when he defeated fellow national rep CM Calvin Prasad in the third round. With the championship all but secure he settled for a final roud draw with Asheesh Gautam who surprized everyone by finishing 3rd overall. CM Prasad beat Asheel Singh to secure the runner up position, a finish that still sees him lead the 2009 Grand Prix.
In the Minor Category it was Gloria Sukhu on fire as she settled for nothingless than a 100% score to clinch the minors title at the event. Sukhu has greatly improved her chess play over the last few months and thoroughly deserved the win ahead of a huge field of 32 participants.
The event was hailed a success after a large turnout of 42 participants for the $1000 event. Tournament co-sponsor Asheesh Gautam was pleased with the championships and thanked the Parmeshwar family for the continued support for the promotion of chess.
